NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth is a friendly competition to see who can write 50 000 words in 30 days. For the entire month of November I will be writing, attempting to hit the 50 000 mark. For three years I’ve tried, and still have yet to succeed. This year I will post excerpts from my novel as often as I remember, in hopes that it will inspire and motivate me to diligently write. These excerpts will be messy and unpolished. That is point behind NaNoWriMo, to write without any regard of finesse. “Literary Abandon” is the term they use. The tile of my novel is “The Watch.” Here is a glimpse at some of my latest work:
The silence was fragile, as what I said was pondered.
I continued, “Listen, this is not time to loose heart. We all knew what we were getting into when we took Olivia’s hand the first time and she showed us her world in the light. We knew that letting the light flow into our world was going to garner attention. Even those of you not regularly a part of the watch, you’ve been around long enough to know that some seriously devious beings out there, completely intent on harming us. The only difference now is that we are being more strategically targeted. The savage wants to keep us on the defense. As long as he has our backs up against the wall, he can go ahead with whatever evil he has planned. It is no longer sufficient to merely play a maintainence role. Cognito is known for it’s peace for a reason. The founding father fought for that peace, that stepped forward and challenged the forces that challenged the peace their families had. We must do the same now. It’s time to step forward with the light, with Olivia at our sides, more than ever before. The reason why you were attacked, Elissa was because of this. You and June were pouring out light and the savage had to stop it somehow. The reason June got hurt was because she was lured into make the conflict a personal and physical. We keep our heads and guard our hearts and we wil ALWAYS have the upper hand.”
Apparently most of the elders had gathered at the library, along with a few adults. Some elders were disappointed that the youth were not as actively involved with the watch. They were encourgaged by the involvement of us younger adults and hoped to see a increased interest amongst the teenagers of Cognito. I was surprised to find out that their meeting was less about what the savage was doing and more about how to include the younger people more often. It always amazed me how the elders focus was so different than mine, but so keen. What concerned me seem slightly more trivial to them. Their trust in Olivia was a fortress and their life in the Sun was vibrant. Devious schemes had been seen plenty in their day. The elders weren’t concerned with the schemes as much as making sure that everyone had a chance to be a part of the solution. I had the utmost respect for them because of this.
