NaNoWriMo Day 14 Excerpt

NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth is a friendly competition to see who can write 50 000 words in 30 days. For the entire month of November I will be writing, attempting to hit the 50 000 mark. For three years I’ve tried, and still have yet to succeed. This year I will post excerpts from my novel as often as I remember, in hopes that it will inspire and motivate me to diligently write. These excerpts will be messy and unpolished. That is point behind NaNoWriMo, to write without any regard of finesse. “Literary Abandon” is the term they use. For info on NaNoWriMo, visit www.nanowrimo.org.

The tile of my novel is “The Watch.” Here is a glimpse at some of my latest work:

NOTE: The weekend was busy. I was able to do a bit of writing, but not a whole lot. Today was a catch up day. I wanted to reach 25k words, but fell a thousand short. Oh well, I still wrote over FOUR THOUSAND words today! I’m more than caught up now!

Standing and staring was the only option right now. This proved that Rusty wasn’t completely crazy and that my instincts had been right. But What was in there? It still hadn’t been opened. Usually the yard workers got right to anything that came their way because they were always trying to make more room for more inventory. Shane stepped up beside me. I could see him looking at me in my peripheral vision, but I didn’t take notice. I didn’t know what to do next. Part of what had me paralyzed was the warning Rusty had given. I didn’t want to open something that would unravel the town, whatever that meant.
Shane finally got my attention, “What’ya be doin’,boy?”
I looked over at Shane. He wore a concerned look.
“Shane, I don’t know that I want to get into this one.”
He smirked, ever so slightly, “Too late, lad. Yer a’ready in it.”

“Don’t delude yourself. None of you have strength here,” I could tell that not even the savage believed his own words. But just to illustrate a point I stepped forward. I could feel the current of the light, it was a strong as ever and steady. Closing my eyes, taking a deep breath, I let the light around all of us manifest. They could see the current, the flow, the ebb. It was avoiding the horde before us, so I stretched out my arms wide and began to slowly close them. The banks for the light around the horde folded in on the shadows, sending them in retreat. The savage and a few other held their ground, even as the light flowed through them. I made sure it was clear that there was no where that we did not have strength.

I watched carefully. The savage raise the whip and cracked it once. I could feel the force of the crack and the whip was no where near me yet. With the whip still in the air, the savage spun his entire body around with an agility that a big creature such as him should not have had. The whip cracked again with sudden change of motion and this time a was caught off balance again. When I recovered, the tangled ropes were closing in on me fast. I hit the ground and rolled into the on coming whip. It passed just over me. I sprang up, aiming to close in on the savage again. He pulled up on the grips, changing the motion of the whip again. I had thought I was in the clear, but the tip had just passed over me and the resounding CRACK didn’t hit me, but the force was enough to send me flying metres aways, crashing into the shelves. My entire left side stung from the force of the crack, the rest of me was bruised from hitting the shelves.

Olivia was standing near the crate and waved for all of us to join her.
“We’ve disrupted the enemies plan, but they are already planning retribution. People are going to be hurt, but those who know the light will know how to stay safe. It is now paramount that all of us take sufficient refuge in the Sun. Only the light of the Sun will be able to guard us from the coming assaults. Make this known to all who know the light and the Sun. I’ll talk to everyone, but the community will need to come together, espcially the watch. As you have in the past, now is the time to remain espcially vigilante. You know the importance of supporting each other, but all of those who live in the light will such encouragement now. You two, Shane and Luke, will be relied upon for your experience here this morning. You will be seen as leaders, and will be looked to for direction and guidance. I have confidence in both of you to empower those around. Now the watch is not only for defending the peace , but for advancing it. Make this known.”
