NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth is a friendly competition to see who can write 50 000 words in 30 days. For the entire month of November I will be writing, attempting to hit the 50 000 mark. For three years I’ve tried, and still have yet to succeed. This year I will post excerpts from my novel as often as I remember, in hopes that it will inspire and motivate me to diligently write. These excerpts will be messy and unpolished. That is point behind NaNoWriMo, to write without any regard of finesse. “Literary Abandon” is the term they use. The tile of my novel is “The Watch.” Here is a glimpse at some of my latest work:
Each of us that had met on the glider platform looked slightly different as we moved through the light. No longer were we recognizable by hair colour, body shape or height. In the light we had our own flare, the look of a burning ember at the core of a raging fire. It was our heart, our desires, our passions, what we loved and what we hated. What now defined was not our physical appearance, but the condition of our heart.
I closed my eyes but nothing went dark. I was now looking at a much older version of the Marina Post. It must have been a hundred years ago. Cognito was much smaller, and much less crowded. It was just me and Olivia, as well as people dressed like they belonged to a much older time in Cognito’s history. There horses with carriages, and a lot of top hats. I looked back over to Olivia. She was looking back at me, but once I met her eyes, she turned and walked into the building. I followed her in.The printing press was huge and loud. We walked to a line where people where stacking papers for delivery. I got a look at the front page headline. Something about a big hunt being extremely successful. Then I opened my eyes and I saw Olivia by the memorial, the team around me, and the crowd of creatures standing entertained in the light.
