NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth is a friendly competition to see who can write 50 000 words in 30 days. For the entire month of November I will be writing, attempting to hit the 50 000 mark. For three years I’ve tried, and still have yet to succeed. This year I will post excerpts from my novel as often as I remember, in hopes that it will inspire and motivate me to diligently write. These excerpts will be messy and unpolished. That is point behind NaNoWriMo, to write without any regard of finesse. “Literary Abandon” is the term they use. For info on NaNoWriMo, visit www.nanowrimo.org.
The tile of my novel is “The Watch.” Here is a glimpse at some of my latest work:
“Listen Luke, you done good, but don’t just let this one go. We may not know it’s meanin’ yet, but that don’t mean it don’t have one. You know what to do. Stay vigilant,” this was his last advice to me for the morning.
Shane had been in Cognito for longer than most people could remember. Most thought he was crazy, but those of us who stand watch knew better than to give him that much credit. He was eccentric, for sure, but crazy is not a word I would use to describe Shane. I remember times when this haggard old man had hunches that would lead us to exact addresses of particular disturbances. I’ve seen Shane in battle too. He doesn’t fight. Shane’s way is so gentle and so scary, I don’t quite understand it.
